Now let none accept the possessions of Alexandros

nor take back Helen; one who is very simple can see it,

that by this time the terms of death hang over the Trojans.

Before this, the Achains have mostly been willing to agree to alternative solutions. They have laid down arms, used single-man combat, and (even as this is said by Diomedes) they have paused to bury the dead. Why this sudden change? Is it confidence from Aias’ pseudo-victory over Hektor? Pride induced by the gods? A resolve to conquer in totality?

It seems a recurrent theme of this work that pride and confidence based in self is fatal. As soon as the character (or historical figure) becomes over-boastful, the gods or fate turn against them. This is true, at least, when such pride is from the work of men, instead of thanksgiving to the gods.

Will the Achains’ new-found victory be turned to tears?

[…]

and all the stars are seen to make glad the heart of the shepherd;

This passage interests me greatly as an example of something present throughout The Iliad and all sorts of other works: describing nature, creation, and the world in terms of its human purpose (or purpose for humans).

Here, Homer writes of the stars and of the beauty of a clear night as something “to make glad the heart of the shepherd”. I find this sort of attitude a lot in older writing, and I feel as though we’ve lost it in a lot of today’s writing (though I know in many ways we still have it, perhaps less explicitly).

It reflects a world view, like that of Abrahamic religions and others, in which the world is not just is, but is for us. The sun warms us, the stars delight us, the wind speaks to us, the birds bring joy, the darkness humility.

I’m fond of it because I think it’s beautiful. I feel more alive enraptured by nature, feeling, than anytime else. How can it not be for us?

Book Nine, Verses 26-49, pp. 217

Sir, sir, can you really believe the sons of the Achains

are so unwarlike and so weak of their hearts […]

I highlight this passage to contrast it and all the circumstances about it with a similar point at the beginning of the poem.

There, Ag. had been told by Zeus that he could sack Ilion, so he went to the people and faked a statement like this one, urging them to return home. Instead of crying out against the idea like they do here, his men ran for their ships, eager to give up.

Now, Zeus having shown his promise a lie, Ag. does the same thing. This time, his people do not give in.

Why? Is it shameful for them to retreat once war has begun? Are they loath to turn back after having lost so many? Blood crazy?

Has Ag. really lost hope? Or is he doing this again to try and inflame the hearts of his followers? (Past: we know he wants to attack, then asks. Here: we are told his heart is grieved… but could he be hopeful still?)

Recurrent theme: pendulum between confident boldness and despondent grief in both armies.

Book Ten, Verses 558-563, pp. 251

[…] and as for their master brave Diomedes killed him

and at his side killed twelve companions […]

I think this interested me because it shocks me and my assumptions.

I’ve grown up with the idea that anyone from a time when you fought with swords must be chivalrous. So I expect that killing people in their sleep then bragging about it would be dishonorable.

That’s apparently not the case. They lied to kill the scout and murdered the unconscious. Where is the King Arthur nicety I expect?

An example of how it’s truly difficult for us to understand everything about these people from thousands of years and miles away. How many other assumptions are we making about their mindsets as we read this work?

Book Twelve, Verses 381-386, pp. 287

[…] A man could not easily

hold it, not even if he were very string, in both hands,

of men such as men are now, but he heaving it high threw it […]

(together with many other examples of this language: “of men such as men are now”)

I chose this passage because its an example of something we relate to today: seeing past verions of ourselves as better or legendary.

Here, Homer describes how men of the Iliad’s age were literally physically better.

Don’t we do the same in other ways? We talk of ages past when we had better values, when we could work with our own sweat to live, when life seemed simpler.

The same thing is present in all sorts of mythologies:

the Númenóreans of Tolkien lived longer, were wiser, almost magical

Norse epics: magically greater warriors

Abrahamic religions: perfection before the Fall, long lives of early post-fall people

Side note: why do we always pull from distant pasts to justify current authority and to find authenticity?

[…] As when in the sky the stars about the moon’s shining

are seen in all their glory, when the air has fallen to stillness,

[…]

and all the stars are seen to make glad the heart of the shepherd;

Come then, do as I say, let us all be won over; let us

run away with our ships to the beloved land of our fathers

[…]
